Massive power outages hit Sumatra this afternoon. From Jambi to Aceh, millions were suddenly plunged into darkness. The cause? A fault in the 275kV Muara Bungo–Sungai Rumbai transmission line in Jambi.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said initial indications point to a problem in the transmission system, worsened by extreme weather. As a result, Sumatra’s power system became unstable. Several power plants were affected, triggering blackouts in Jambi, West Sumatra, Riau, North Sumatra, and Aceh.
PLN has issued an apology to affected residents. Field teams have been deployed to restore the grid gradually.
What’s frustrating: this isn’t the first time Sumatra has been paralyzed by a single point of failure. One cable issue in Jambi, and half the island goes dark.
In an era of increasingly frequent extreme weather, this incident is a stark warning about the vulnerability of the national electricity infrastructure. One local disruption becomes a regional issue that disrupts economic activity, public services, and even public safety.
Recovery is still underway. PLN is asking the public to monitor official updates. But the real question now is: how prepared is our power system if the weather keeps getting wilder and the grid gets heavier?
